The Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Garry Nkombo, has instructed Local Authorities in Luapula Province to collaborate with traditional leaders to create farming blocks for youths and women with the aim to increase food production in the country.
Speaking at the launch of Integrated Development Plans (IDPs) for 8 districts, including Mansa, Nkombo emphasized the potential of the northern region in the farming sector.
“Despite the devastating effects of climate change, the northern region still receives good rainfall to support farming and that is why on instruction of President Hakainde Hichilema, I urge all the Local Authorities present today to engage the Royal Highnesses to include plans for Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (SMEs) in traditional areas, especially for youths and women,” he urged.
The Minister suggested allocating small parcels of land (4-5 hectares) for willing youths and women to use for farming in order to boost food production.
He also challenged Principal Officers to effectively manage land allocations and prevent unplanned settlements through proactive planning, as mandated by the Urban and Regional Planning Act, 2015.
This directive is a significant step towards empowering youths and women in agriculture and promoting sustainable development in Luapula Province. By engaging traditional leaders and allocating land for farming, the government aims to increase food production and mitigate the effects of climate change.
