January 2nd, 2026 –Mansa Municipal Council has moved decisively to protect residents after disposing of expired food and beverage products seized from shops in the Central Business District.
The destruction of the goods marks a firm stand by the Local Authority against a growing and worrying trend of expired products finding their way onto shop shelves and into households.
As a Council we are concerned at the large quantities of expired items being sold to unsuspecting consumers and we are warning all business owners that such practices put public health at risk, especially for children, the elderly and people with compromised immunity.
Expired products can cause food poisoning, long-term health complications and, in severe cases, death and this calls for concerted efforts from all stakeholders to help curb the vice.
The Local Authority has intensified enforcement measures, as Public Health Inspectors have intensified conducting routine inspections across the district, targeting shops, supermarkets, tuck shops and trading premises.
Business owners found stocking or selling expired products will face penalties in line with public health laws, including confiscation of goods and possible prosecution.
The Council is also appealing directly to residents to play their part in safeguarding their health. Consumers are urged to make checking expiry dates a habit before purchasing or consuming any product and to immediately report any shop or trader selling expired goods.
This action sends a clear message that public health is non-negotiable, and Mansa will not tolerate practices that endanger the lives of its people.
